THE ART OF SCUS

Just 14 km from Borgo Terra village, in the picturesque village of Reana del Rojale, an ancient craft art combines creativity, sustainability and tradition: the weaving of "scus", a Friulian term for the corn leaves ("cartoccio").
This practice, born around 1620 with the arrival of corn in Friuli Venezia Giulia, exploits every part of the plant to create unique objects such as bags, baskets, dolls and decorations.

Originally used as animal bedding or mattress padding, the scus was soon transformed into ropes and weavings by the women and children of the community, who thus supplemented the family income. The art experienced a great development between the 60s and 80s of the twentieth century thanks to Don Mario Fabrizio, founder of the Cooperativa Artigiana Cartocciai Friulani and of a professional school, who led the Friulian scus bags to be sold throughout Europe, until in New York.

When plastic became the most used material, however, craftsmanship suffered a decline. Today, thanks to the commitment of the Pro Loco del Rojale, the scus is experiencing a rebirth, enhancing the authenticity and sustainability of this tradition. Corn leaves, robust and versatile, allow endless creative possibilities, from the production of resistant bags to decorative objects such as "pipinis" (dolls).

Each hand-woven piece demonstrates how a simple material can be transformed into an artisanal treasure.
The scus is an excellent example of circular economy and represents an authentic experience for those who visit Friuli Venezia Giulia.

At Borgo Terra we strongly believe in the value of traditions and in the importance of promoting the heritage of our territory.
Scus dolls, with their beauty, are a perfect gift idea for Christmas: a symbol of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
